The 2018 SAE Group Australian Surf Festival saw a change of pace today as the North Star Holiday Resort Australian Bodyboard Titles kicked off in wedgey three-foot waves at Dreamtime Beach.

Nathan Wilson (Kiama, NSW) set a high standard in the opening round of the Open Men’s division, posting an excellent 8.00 scoring wave. Wilson performed a handful of high-flying acrobatic maneuvers in the heat to lock in the score and send a warning shot to fellow competitors. As a result of the heat win, Wilson has sealed his position straight into the quarterfinals.

Mauricio Abrunhosa (Dee Why, NSW), Hunter Nichols (Kiama, NSW) and Brad Harrington (Kingscliff, NSW) also all claimed respective wins in their opening Open Men’s heats.

Noah Gillroy (Maroubra, NSW), Joel Hughan (Trigg, WA), Kai De-Legh (Scarborough, WA), Hunter Nicholls (Kiama, NSW) and Patrick Franklyn (Palmyra, WA) were all dominant performers in the first round of the Junior Men’s division (Under-18). All five surfers will make their next appearance in the quarterfinals.

Britt Ladley (Gold Coast, Qld) made her presence felt in the Open Women’s division notching up a respectable 10.25 two-wave heat total. Ladley will meet fellow Queensland representative Rachel Summers (Qld) and NSW bodyboarders Kaylah Pisani (Boat Harbour, NSW) and Millie Chalker (Tuncurry, NSW) in the second round of competition.
