The 2018 SAE Group Australian Surf Festival saw a day of exciting shortboard action as the elder age divisions went hell-for-leather in long-running four-to-five foot righthanders.

Jay Phillips (Fingal, NSW) and Sean Lancaster (Newcastle, NSW) kicked off the Over-40 Mens quarterfinals in stellar fashion, with both surfers posting a handful of giant scores. Lancaster managed to set a high benchmark, nailing a near-perfect 9.50 wave score for a chain of massive backhand snaps, however Phillips was able to claw his way in front thanks to decent 8.15 and 7.00 wave scores to amass a 15.15 two-wave heat total. As a result, both surfers have sealed themselves a spot into the semi-finals and Lancaster was awarded the SAE Power Performer Of The Day award thanks to the aforementioned score.

Brett Bannister (Narrabeen, NSW) continued his dominance of the Over-45 Men’s division, posting a decent 16.60 two-wave heat total. Bannister nailed a handful of impressive forehand carves and snaps to notch up the score and earn a spot into the semi-finals.

Not to be outdone, Mick Hassett (Miami, Qld) posted a 15.15 two-wave heat total to also claim a victory in his Over-45 Men’s quarterfinal. Hassett laid down an eclectic mix of backhand carves and hits to post the score and cement a spot into the semis.

After uncharacteristically landing in the requalification rounds, Rod Baldwin (Copacabana, NSW) proceeded to earn his position back into the main round of the Over-50 Mens with an impressive performance early in the day. Baldwin executed a barrage of giant backhand hooks in the heat to post a respectable 14.75 two-wave heat total and earn his ticket back into the main round of competition.
