The elder shortboard divisions at the 2018 SAE Australian Surf Festival were graced with playful long right-handers today as they sought to bypass the requalification rounds.

Jay Phillips (Fingal, NSW) showed his knowledge of long righthand pointbreaks, decimating an array of sections in the opening heat of the Over-40 Men’s division. Phillips posted a giant 9.25 wave score followed by a 7.25, to amass a giant 16.50 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20 points).  As a result, Phillips will jump the repechage rounds and make his next appearance in the quarterfinals.

Not to be outdone, David McGrath (Labrador, Qld) used his powerful backhand repertoire to lock in an impressive 15.50 two-wave heat total and leave his closest competitor needing a near perfect 9.25 wave score to take away his lead.

Paul Snow (Bar Beach, NSW) and Damien Healy (Broadbeach, Qld) also claimed respective victories in their opening Over-40 Men’s heats.

Uncharacteristically, former Australian Champions Mitch Dawkings (Nelson Bay, NSW), Paul Parkes (Merewether, NSW) and Mark Richardson (Palm Beach, Qld) all suffered first-round losses in the 40 Men’s and will have to battle through the upcoming requalification rounds.

Brett Bannister (Narrabeen, NSW) showed why he was a former Over-28 Australian Men’s Champion dominating his opening Over-45 Men’s heat. The northern beaches natural-footer posted an excellent 9.00 wave score as well as an 8.65 to take his two-wave heat total to 17.65. As a result, Bannister was awarded the SAE Power Performer of the Day.

Other Over-45 Men’s round one heat winners included Kyle Robinson (Robina, Qld), Luke Howarth (Avalon, NSW) and Mark Richardson.
