The Australian Longboard Titles heated up today as competitors in the Over-40 Loggers and all repechage heats competed in minuscule one-foot waves in an attempt to avoid elimination and seal a position back into the finals.
Queensland duo Hayden Swan (Noosa, Qld) and Damian Coulter (Mountain Creek, Qld) both made it known they’d be major threats in the Over-40 Loggers division, with both surfers posting impressive two-wave heat totals in excess 16.15 points. Both surfers performed an array of traditional nose-rides and drop-knee cutbacks to notch up the aforementioned totals and bypass the second-chance repechage rounds.
Greg Brown (Jan Juc, Vic) continued to round out the interstate domination of the Over-40 Loggers, posting a 13.00 heat total to bypass the repechage rounds.
Bob Monkman (Dunsborough, WA) made his trip to the east coast worthwhile, mustering up an impressive 15.50 two-wave heat total in his Over-60 Men’s repechage heat. Monkman surfed like a man 15 years his junior, performing a series of backside hits and nose-rides to take out his heat convincingly.
Wally Allen (Coorooy, Qld) and Glen Gower (Sunrise Beach, Qld) rounded out the epic morning run of results for the interstate competitors with both surfers going toe-to-toe and blow-for-blow in their Over-50 Men’s repechage heat. Allen and Gower both posted a handful of near-perfect scores to keep their Australian Longboard Title campaigns on track and earn a position in the quarterfinals.
The 2017 Australian Surf Festival continues tomorrow from 7:30am the more of the Australian Longboard Titles.
