Ben Dickens (NSW) has won the double at the 2017 Australian Surf Festival today in Cabarita, taking out both the Over 40 Men’s Logger and Longboard national titles with an impressive display of skill and self-belief on finals day.

“Yeah baby! It was awesome and I am so stoked to have surfed against the guys and it’s an honour to be an Australian champion,” said a stoked Dickens.

The northerly wind held off just long enough to run all seven scheduled finals on the Tweed Coast with all competitors surfing with outstanding skill and more importantly sportsmanship in the clean 1-2ft point walls.

Highlights (apart from the Dickens double) included a clinical display from elder statesmen Daniel Bond (NSW) in the Over 65 Men’s Longboard final. Bond showing poise and grace to post two solid scores of 8.60pts and 7.90pts (out of a possible 10pts) to just pip an equally impressive Alan Atkins (NSW) by just .10 of a point in a nail bitter.

Over 50 Men’s winner Hayden Swan (QLD) summed up what has been a fantastic event for all involved.

“It’s a sweet feeling after a long week of great weather and good surfing in lovely waves. It’s been a well-run contest and to cap it off with a win is just an excellent feeling,” said Swan.
