The 2017 Big 4 North Star Holiday Resort & Caravan Park Australian Bodyboard Titles got underway today at Cabarita on the Tweed Coast.
A sunny day and 1-2ft punchy peaks made for outstanding surfing from the first heat of the day with Open Men’s Round 1 getting things underway.
Calen Jordan (QLD), John Cruickshank (NSW) and Guy Drerup (VIC) were standouts in round one as a light northerly wind kept things relatively clean on the south side of the Cabarita headland with a few barrels being ridden early on.
Jordan got his campaign off to a flying start, posting two excellent scores in heat 1 with 8.75pt and 8.00pt rides (out of a possible 10pts) to lay down the single highest heat total (16.75pts out of a possible 20pts) for the round.
In heat five Cruickshank almost eclipsed Jordan by matching his 8.75pt highest single wave score but couldn’t get another excellent wave to back it up with in the wedgy conditions.
Drerup also bypassed the requalification round to join Jordan and Cruickshank in the quarter finals with a 12.50pt heat total that included an 8.00pt ride to win heat 2.
The Junior Men’s and Cadets divisions were an entertaining affair even in deteriorating conditions as the onshore set in and tide went out.
Under 16 Cadet standouts were Clay Murphy (NSW), Jack Roges (NSW) and Patrick Franklyn (WA).
The judges had their work cut out for them on wave count alone in the 16 Cadets first round, competitors racking up plenty of scoring opportunities with Franklyn the top scorer.
Requalification rounds and the Over 45 Men’s Final were run in challenging conditions late this afternoon with Tasmania’s Karl Gol taking home the 45 Men’s title.
Over 45 Men’s Final
1st Karl Gol (TAS)
2nd Justin Becker (QLD)
3rd Greg Purtle (QLD)
4th Paul Mace (NSW)
A southerly wind change is forecast to blow in overnight, stay tuned for a possible venue change tomorrow.
